The designer of any successful commuting system must first define the goals. We believe that many systems fail to establish a clear focus from the start and, at best, result in "doing things right" rather than "doing the right things".
The goals of a rapid mass transit system should be:
In transportation, there exists three levels of commuting:
- micro commuting -
- - travel between localized destinations (within a few miles) such as home and grocery store or work and lunch cafe
- macro commuting -
- - travel between semi-localized destinations (between three and thirty miles or so) such as home to work or home to local major shopping mall
- regional commuting -
- - travel between cities and towns within thirty to two hundred miles of each other
